The first ever Relay for life in Olney, TX was a huge success. Hundreds worked, planned and raised mega funds for this year’s event.   Brazos Telephone along with team members Connected for Hope were ready to help. We had such a good time and thought it would be fun to share a few of the pictures taken during the night of relay.

We are especially proud of two awards presented to team members Mrs. Pat B for the “Most Individual Money Raised” and “Best of Show” to Donald Ickert creator of our Road to Recovery Car.  Good Job!

We would also like to say a great big THANK YOU to all who supported our team, Connected for Hope.  We could not have been so successful without your help.

Why do you still need a landline?

Many people have started replacing their landline with cell phone service, unaware of the potential consequences of not maintaining a landline phone. While having a cell phone has become standard for a large percentage of the population, we should not forget the importance of also having a landline, which is a proven, reliable and ubiquitous form of communication. Having a traditional landline in your home is more than a matter of comfort – it is an essential tool for home and family security.

Note: A news cast aired on October 13, 2011 by WHO-TV 13 in Des Moines, Iowa found that 9-1-1 dispatchers were detecting cell phones up to 14 blocks away from their true locations – which can lose valuable time in an emergency. Watch the complete newscast below. http://whotv.com/2011/10/31/911-knowledge-channel-13s-dan-winters-investigates-how-smart-your-smart-phone-is-in-an-emergency/

At-Home Emergency
During an at-home emergency, you can call 9-1-1 with a landline phone and an emergency dispatch center in an enhanced 9-1-1 service area will automatically receive your location and be able to dispatch an accurate emergency response. If a young child or critically injured adult must call 9-1-1, this can save valuable time and sometimes even lives. While a cell phone can help pinpoint a location, it is not nearly as accurate or reliable in an emergency. A landline can also be connected directly to a home security system, which provides another layer of protection for you and your family.

Value and Reliability
A traditional landline phone provides affordable and reliable service, with unlimited local calling. Unlike a cell phone, a traditional landline phone has superior quality of sound and clarity, and there are no dropped calls. For example, a charged cell phone will work during a power outage, but its reliability is jeopardized if the cell tower site is down or if the signal is weak. A landline phone is a reliable and easy way to stay connected with family and friends during an emergency situation.

Power Outages
In a power outage, you can no longer charge a cell phone but with a traditional landline phone, there is no charging or backup required. Your local telecommunications provider will maintain the emergency backup system that keeps your phone working, even when the power goes out, as long as there is at least one non-cordless phone in your home. Many cell phone towers have a battery backup which only protects you for a few hours during a power outage and even fewer actually have an on-site diesel generator. For the most reliable coverage during a power outage, a traditional landline is essential.

Natural Disasters
Many factors can affect a cell phone tower, especially natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and ice storms. For example, many cell towers along the Gulf Coast stopped working as a result of power losses during Hurricane Katrina, causing communication breakdowns that complicated rescue and recovery efforts. On September 11, 2001, cell phone networks were overwhelmed by the sheer number of individuals trying to make calls at the same time. Although natural disasters may also affect traditional telephone lines, local providers are almost always on hand immediately to work to solve their problem quickly and efficiently, so that disruption to service is minimal.

Super Couponing and Basics of Facebook Classes Were A Hit!

We had so much fun during our Super-Couponing and Basics of Facebook classes held last month that we just had to tell you about it.

Jill Cataldo author of the Super-Couponing DVD presentation showed us a lot of ways to SAVE money and that you can never have too many coupons. We loved learning about the various types of coupons available such as Manufacturer Coupons, Store Coupons and Catalina Coupons. Who knew that electronic coupons downloaded and printed from home, along with coupon apps on my iPhone, would turn me into a saving machine? For more information about Super-Couponing, visit www.supercouponing.com or jllcataldo.com.

Jordan and Teea Reed presented the Basics of Facebook in a simple yet slow paced format which made it easy for us to follow along. Even those of us who work with Facebook every day, learned a few things. And, that the new timeline… is not a bad thing.

To learn more about upcoming free technology classes at Brazos click on the link here, or check your inbox, the brazosnet.com website, local newspaper and the Olney Texas Marquee for notices from Brazos Internet. We look forward to seeing you at our next class.

iPhone Shortcut

As the proud owner of my new iPhone 4s discovering new functions of the phone are never ending. But my latest discovery is so cool, and, well….I just had to share it.  If you are like most of us you use shortcuts everyday, on your desktop, laptop, in recipes and now you can on your iPhone. Trust me you are going to love this one.

Simply press the menu (home) button and the power (on/off)button at the same time.  You will hear a snap similar to when you take a picture. The screenshot is now saved to your camera roll. Just tap your photos icon and you will find your screenshot saved there.

To help you get a visual of how this shortcut works we decided to record it.

What is Google Apps?

Google Apps is a suite of web-based messaging and collaboration applications that Google hosts on their own servers. Google provides these applications as a “service,” rather than as software to download and install. To access these applications, you simply use a web browser on a computer that’s connected to the Internet.

Why did we choose to Go Google?

There are so many benefits to using Google Apps:

Access to services from anywhere, anytime – Access email, contacts, and calendar from any computer or mobile device with an Internet connection, anywhere in the world

More collaboration features – With Google’s next-generation applications, we can collaborate with friends, family, neighbors, colleagues, customers, and partners more easily and efficiently than ever before Continue reading

Google Apps Coming Soon!

February 7, 2012

To Our Valued Internet Customers,

Brazos Internet is adding Google Apps™ suite of tools to your Internet service effective February 15, 2012.  Google Apps is an online, Web-based package of Internet, messaging and word processing tools that include powerful email, calendar, instant messaging (IM/Chat), document management, and personal website services. Your online experience will be enhanced by increased email capacity and security. Google Apps allows you to work on documents together with friends and family with ease. Your email storage capacity will be increased to 7GB and your document and website combined storage capacity will be 1GB. Brazos Internet will also offer Google Postini ™ Message Filtering, an enhanced spam and virus protection service, and Google’s standard spam and virus protection service.

In order to implement these changes, Brazos Internet will need to move existing email and settings over to the new platform. This will take some time so we are asking that you not make any changes to your email account settings from 4:00PM Central time on Friday February 10, 2012 until the morning of Wednesday February 15, 2012. Any changes made to your email settings during this time — Contacts, Allowed Senders, folder structure, etc. — may not be saved, and access to some services like the MyAccount Control Panel will be blocked. You can however, continue to send and receive email as always during this time.

For two weeks following the move, Brazos Internet will allow you to access your existing email using WebMail (and/or MyPlace) in the event that the email migration to Google is still in progress. All email should be available in Google Apps shortly following the migration. Access to GreyMail is also provided for two weeks following the migration to retrieve any email that was inadvertently quarantined as spam.                                         Continue reading
