Outside Plant Apprentice – Brazos Communications has an immediate opening for an Outside Plant Apprentice. Applicant will learn about installation and repair of communications equipment in offices, private homes, and buildings. Outside plant apprentice must be able to meet the physical demands of the job, which may include heavy lifting, climbing ladders, and working in attics or crawlspaces. Pre-employment drug test and background check required.  Applicant must have a valid driver’s license.


Central Office Engineer Technician – Brazos Communications has an immediate opening for a Central Office Engineer Technician. This position is responsible for day to day installation, operations, and maintenance of the Central Office FTTH and DSL access utilizing Broadband, (Calix) Telephony, (MetaSwitch), as well as transmission equipment including special circuits, radio, and fiber multiplexer equipment. The ideal candidate will be a part of a Team involved in the operation of the hardware/software to meet the growing and ever changing needs of Brazos Communications data and telephony network. As a Team member the candidate must be technically savvy, have excellent communication skills and very strong troubleshooting ability under pressure. The job entails meeting customer requirements with hosted unified communication and IP services, working with technicians and customers to resolve issues proactively. The position will need to maintain and uphold the cleanliness standards of the central offices as it needs to be a clean/cool environment for constant functionality. The candidate will need to be available for trouble call out on weekly 24/7 basis coordinating with other technicians.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate and troubleshoot TDM, IP core and CPE equipment.
  • Perform turn-up, acceptance, installation and provisioning of circuit/T1s.
  • Install, operate and maintain remote switching units, SIP PBX, digital switching and transmission equipment, soft switches and broadband subscriber switches.
  • Operate and maintain digit maps and other translations on telephony switch.
  • Test and implement new central office equipment
  • Install and maintain central office power systems including batteries and generators.
  • Prepare short term and long term application engineering plans and specifications for additional equipment or upgrades.
  • Stay informed on all technical developments affecting switching and central office activity including development of new equipment, preventative maintenance procedures, training programs and testing techniques.
  • Accountable for accuracy of applicable plant records as well as timely trouble ticket resolution and reporting.
  • Operate and maintain session border controllers for security of IP phone and call admission.
  • Ability to use Telecom network related test equipment and measurement equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in IPV4 networking and troubleshooting basic business network topology issues including business WiFi and IOT.
  • Experience working with digit maps, number validation, routing and route verification.
  • At least six (6) months experience within the last five (5) years diagnosing circuit trouble, and performing routine testing, including measuring AC/DC current using volt ohm meters, TMS, or comparable test equipment.
  • At least six (6) months experience within the last five (5) years provisioning and maintaining DSO, DS1/T1, DS3/T3, DSL and ISDN circuits or services.
  • Basic electricity knowledge as it relates to telecommunications (through classes or on the job related training) including: reading & interpreting circuit diagrams, equipment drawings, & technical manuals.
  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools.
  • Working knowledge of analog, digital test and transmission equipment, volt-ohm meter, or comparable testing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Sonet/DWDM equipment and services (e.g. DCS and optical muxes).
  • Ability to troubleshoot and isolate problems within physical or electrical circuits.
  • Ability to respond to callouts within reasonable timeframe.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including, but not limited to lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires a valid state drivers’ license with current satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work aloft (e.g. ladder).
  • Ability to provide efficient, quality service to both internal and external customers both face-to-face and over the phone.
  • Ability to multi task under pressure in an ever changing environment.
